FAQ
Q. What. Is. Happening. Why all the fuss??
A. Jeremy is turning 50 (duh!), so he and Nick want you and yours to come to Iceland to celebrate with us over Labor Day weekend 2024! It’s sort of like a wedding, but without the ceremony or vows (sorry John Cahill), and we don’t need anyone to buy us a mixer or a toaster, but it’s very likely to include long-winded (hopefully funny) toasts, and ridiculous dancing, and an open bar, as part of a three-day party with the people we love most.
Q. In Iceland?! Seriously, you couldn’t just do this in Jersey City or East Hampton?
A. I mean, we could, but we throw parties in the Jerz and the Hamptons all the time. Most of you have probably been (whether you can remember or not is not our fault), but this is special! And it’s not as far as you think. Only 4.5 hours from the East Coast of the US, and less than 3 hours from most cities in Western Europe.
Q. Ok, but why Iceland?
A. It’s beautiful there! Nick and Jeremy went on vacation in December 2022, and saw volcanos and cool wildlife and got massages and other amazing spa treatments at the Blue Lagoon and ate some fantastic local food and it was then that Jeremy decided he wanted his 50th to be celebrated here. There is loads to do in the Summer.
Q. How exactly does one get to Iceland?
A. The Iditarod, Donna. Just kidding, they have an airport! Icelandair is the country’s main carrier and there are tons of flights from various parts of the US and Europe. And, they have a really nifty feature where you can tack on a few extra days in another place (ie come to Iceland for the party, then fly to Paris for some shopping and baguette eating for a few days and then go home) with no extra charges. Cool, right?!
Q. Should I book flights now?
A. Absolutely, once you know which dates you want to arrive and leave (see below for more guidance there) but This. Is. Happening. and ticket prices are pretty reasonable, so book now and get the best rate you can.
FAQ
Q. Where do I stay?
A. Anywhere you want. The whole country is about the same size as Kentucky, and 40% of it is tundra so it’s actually a pretty small place. All the party activities will be in the capital city of Reykjavík and we will be staying at the Edition Hotel (part of the Marriott family for those looking to earn or cash in points), which is where drinks will be on Thursday night and is within walking distance of Friday and Saturday’s evening activities. But there are lots of other options you can consider including AirBnB or Bed & Breakfast, as well as other hotels such as several Hilton properties, Hotel Borg, Sand Hotel, Center Hotel, or Radisson Blu.
Q, Should I book a hotel now?
A. Yes
Q. When should we plan to arrive and leave?
A. The festivities start in the evening on Thursday August 29 (which is Jeremy’s actual birthday) and will wrap up in the wee hours of the morning on Sunday, September 1. Coming from the US, the flight is generally an overnight one, so to arrive in time, we suggest leaving no later than Wednesday August 28. Flights back to the US are daytime flights so if you’re really ambitions, you could plan a departure for mid-day on Sunday, but we recommend giving yourself a day to relax and rehydrate and find your phone and/or your passport (looking at you, Veronica) and head home no earlier than Monday Sept 2. For those coming from Europe, there are lots of options on various carriers and no overnight flights required. But definitely consider coming a bit earlier or staying a bit longer so you have time to see all the amazing things Iceland has to offer.
Q. Can I bring someone (ie, my best friend, my in-laws, my kids, someone else’s kids, fluffy cats, adorable dogs, etc.)?
A. Totally up to you. There’s lots to do and see, and much of it is kid-friendly (but not really pet friendly, and you can decide if it’s in-law friendly) and if you want to bring a friend (or several friends) that fine with us, just let us know when you RSVP so we can plan accordingly. Kids can certainly join us for dinner on Friday evening, but Thursday drinks and Saturday party are 18 and up.
FAQ
Q. I know you said it wasn’t a wedding, but is there some kind of birthday gift registry?
A. No. Your journey is your gift. Plus, Jeremy just buys whatever he wants when he wants it, so trying to figure out a good gift for him is a real pain. But seriously, please no gifts at all. Just having you all there for this party would be an amazing gift.
Q. Isn’t it going to be freezing?
A. Not in August. Average temperature is between 56 degrees and 47 degrees, and the sun is up from about 6 am till 9pm. Plan accordingly and bring layers that will keep you comfortable, but you can leave the big parkas and mittens at home.
Q. I heard there’s a volcano that’s erupting right now? Is it really safe to go?
A. It is true that a volcanic eruption started on the Reykjanes peninsula on 18 December 2023 - and continues. Icelandic authorities do not have any major concerns about travel at this time. No flights have been impacted and Ring Road (the main road that runs around Iceland) is open and completely unaffected, as are all activities in the city of Reykjavik. That could change, and if it does we will update everyone (and have no backup plan), but as of right now, there are no concerns that should prevent any of us from going. Volcanic activity is near the Blue Lagoon, which keeps opening and closing depending on road closures. Everyone still goes to Hawaii, so you need to calm down.
Q. What about the polar bears and penguins?? Where can I see them??
A. Sorry, bro. Neither is native to Iceland. You’re much more likely to see penguins in South Africa and Antarctica or da bears in places like Alaska, Canada, Russia or at Soldier’s Field on Chicago’s south side.
Q. Could you stop with the dad jokes?
A. Probably not. That’s just the way eye roll.
Q. What do I do if I have other questions not answered here?
A. Text, call or email Nick (+1.917.783.8448) / (nicholas.cernese@gmail.com) or the birthday boy himself (+1.917.981.8110) / (jerberg@gmail.com)

The entrance to the bar is somewhat hidden, and you’ll need a password (no, seriously) to enter, which will be revealed when you arrive in Iceland. Space is limited, so come and go at any point throughout the first evening!

The pure natural beauty of Iceland is truly incredible, and no better way to see it than a boat ride to an island for dinner. Meet at the Old Harbor (short walk from the EDITION and other nearby hotels). Grab a cocktail as we head to Viðey Island for a cozy and rustic campfire-style BBQ dinner. Beer, wine and champagne for this one (you can grab a martini when you return to dry land) along with soft drinks etc. You’ll get to try some local cuisine, but with the volume turned up! Birthday party
Rock the Discotheque!
Theme: Miami Vice - without the cocaine and murder. Popped collars and pastels. White. Rolled everything.
Loafers. Espadrilles. Sweaters for Summer. Linen for Winter.
It’s called Pablo Discobar for a reason, people.
Remember when we used to get ready at 10 pm, show up to the club around 11:30 pm, and stumble home at 3 am with greasy pizza to watch old episodes of Sex and the City, then pass out on the couch? Maybe that was just me. Don’t judge. Anyway, get ready to relive your youth at the club with the best name in the history of clubs: Pablo Discobar. Exactly what you think, We have the entire 2nd floor, an open bar, and a DJ who will spin songs we actually know.
· Pablo Discobar – about 15 mins walk from the EDITION, more like 5-6 mins walk if you are staying at the Curio or Hilton
· 9 pm - ??? (I think they close at 3 am if anyone but Jeremy can hang on that long…)
FAQ
Q: I don’t even know how to pronounce most of those street names, much less find them. Please help.
A: No problem. A quick search on Apple Maps or Google will find all these places and give you clear walking directions.
Q: I can’t walk in heels! How will I get around?
A: No Uber in Iceland, but there are taxis, and an app... Download Taxi Hreyfill, and you’ll be fine.
Q: What do I wear to all of these fabulous events? Is there a dress code?
A: No official dress code per se (this isn’t Catholic school) but each evening does have a bit of a theme, and as such, some suggested guidance for attire.
Q: I don’t really understand what most of those words and themes mean, possibly because I didn’t go to Parsons and/or I work at EY. Do I show up in khakis and a blazer, or is their hope for me?
A: I got you, bud. Thankfully, our very dear friend, Meg Gallagher, is a real stylist for real people, who not only knows what all those words mean, but can speak to you for a few minutes and figure out exactly what you need for the weekend. She is based in LA but comes to NYC frequently, or she can work with you fully remote to pick out pieces that will look fabulous for each day at a price point that you are comfortable with. Reach out to her and she will work her magic. I promise, you will never shop for yourself again! www.meggallagher.com T: 347-351-8808 E: meg@meggallagher.com
Q: Are you really, really sure it’s not going to be freezing cold?
A: Yes, I’m sure. August in Iceland ranges between 50-70 degrees F. Thursday and Saturday evenings are fully indoor; the Friday evening dinner will be indoor and outdoor. Also keep in mind that the sun is up from approx. 6 am till 9 pm each day. All the events are no more than a 15 min walk from the nearby hotels, and taxis are easily accessible if needed. Layers are always a good idea so that you can adjust as needed, but it should feel like a lovely spring / early fall day with more sunshine than most of us are used to.
FAQ
Q: That’s all very helpful for the evening, but what do I do during the day besides nurse my hangover from the night before?
A: There’s loads to do, from shopping to spa, from museums to golf. Check out the To Do page for some suggestions, but the concierges at all the hotels are excellent and if there is something specific you’re interested in, including but not limited to anything noted here, let them know and they can help to arrange. Or there’s Google.
Q: How ‘bout food? Any suggestions besides the late night falafel place mentioned above?
A: You betcha. Listed a bunch of places that we have been to and enjoyed in the Restaurant pages.
Q: How do I get the most up to the minute news, including the password for Thursday’s event?
A: First, make sure you’re on WhatsApp. We’ll text everyone there with links to fun stuff. Second, We’ll probably use Confetti, a web based situation that lots of folks are using to share updates and news with a group during events such as weddings and family reunions. But you don’t need to download or do anything to be a part of that. You’ll get links to click in and know what’s up! It’ll be like Julie McCoy from the Love Boat, but via the interwebs. We’ll be posting updates at least twice a day starting on Wednesday 28 Aug until Monday 2 Sept. Trust me, you won’t want to miss the live reports!

Things to do
Things to do, first stop, Google! The entire country and everyone there is all about the things to do. It’s not complicated. You just need to decide what you want to do! Some suggestions:
Friday is the worst day to book an all day excursion! There’s a boat to dinner that leaves on a schedule. You miss the boat, you miss the dinner!
Saturday is the best day to book an excursion! The party starts at 9pm. Plenty of time to travel far.
Sunday is a good day to lay around, spa, lagoon, nurse that three day hangover.
Beyond that... Lagoons! Geothermal springs into (mostly) man made pools, but they have minerals, bars, some have massages, and you should go!
Blue Lagoon, obvs. Sky Lagoon, super close to the city. Hvammsvik, looks amazing. Secret Lagoon, no longer a secret. Fontana, not too far!
Go see some live volcanic eruptions! We used, Reykjavik Helicopters because they’re in town, but plenty of other options at Guide To Iceland!
Organize a tour or book a private driver to take you wherever you want. Make friends. Form a group. They can do all size groups and types of tours!
Get started here:

Midrange - Arctic Adventures
Luxury - Eskimos - Our amazing party planners, but they really specialize in tailor made tours that look AMAZING! info@eskimos.is
Finally, if you have the time to leave Reykjavik for a night or two in another area, you should! ION is a fun Golden Circle option. Kria is in the South Coast, which really is amazing!
ENJOY! Get outside. You’ll never see anyting else like Iceland... Unless you go to New Zealand. Hahahahahaha. Hmmmm... 60th?
